Commercial St.

Commercial Street is a street downtown Portland, Maine. In 2008, it was named one of the 10 best streets in the United States by the American Planning Association.  It was built upon old piers in the 1850s. Fill was pushed into Casco Bay to accommodate the growing railroad and warehousing needs of the port's working waterfront. In the 1970s and 1980s, much of the economic activity on the street was hurt and many of the properties on the street were sold off for non-marine development, including the building of condominiums. In 1987, Portland voters, led by local fisherman based on Commercial Street, halted all non-marine development along the street and adjacent docks. Marine development around Commercial Street returned in the 1990s and 2000s alongside other economic development, including tourism-related industries.

DiMillo's Floating Restaurant

DiMillo's Floating Restaurant on the water in the Old Port is as much a landmark for the city of Portland as any physical landmark. The DiMillo family name has been operating a restaurant in Portland for over 50 years. The floating restaurant now attracts mostly surf and turf eaters, and boasts a large in size bar with a smaller selection of draft beer. They cater to the seasons not offering a happy hour during the summer months and bringing the enticement back in October for the locals.

Flatbread

Flat Bread Pizza in the Old Port is a small chain through the Northeast, which sells some excellent brick oven pizza. They do in fact also have a full bar just inside with some great drafts available as well.

Old Port Sea Grill

A Bar with a more metro feel, Old Port Sea Grill on Commercial St. Portland has a respectable beer selection, with rotating draft specials (don't worry, we'll keep you up to date). The upscale atmosphere of the bar makes for a nice change from one's regular rounds, and is certainly worth the visit. Our suggestion is the Geary's HSA with the Winter Point Oyster plate - can't go wrong.

J's Oyster Bar

J's Oyster Bar on the water in the Old Port serves beer, and oysters, who'd a thunk. Well they serve Chesapeake Bay oysters to be accurate. While we're used to seeing the local names of oyster like Winter Point Oysters, or Pemaquid, those are not what you will get here. They do offer a very authentic oyster bar experience and they do pour plenty of local brews for you to chase the bivalves down. Prices are good, and they offer outside seating. However, to be aware they are hidden from sight directly from Commercial st.

The Porthole

Porthole on Custom House Wharf will get you breakfast, beer and a large back deck right on the water. I actually like that it's in a run down looking building and smells like dead fish all around, this actually gives the neighborhood the real working waterfront kind of feel. What they lack in beer options they make up for in location and this also serves as a great warm up to the Comedy Connection right next door.

Dry Dock

The Dry Dock on Commercial street in the Old Port is a great place to get a good beer and some local seafood. I like this place for a relaxed beer, and to sit out on the porch on sunny Saturdays. Also of note, if you go to the downstairs bathroom, opposite of the kitchen entrance, you'll find a pleasant surprise.

Commercial St. Pub

he Commercial St. pub located right at the corner of Silver St. and Commercial St. is the sort of place you can expect to find the locals of the Portland. Not going to lie, the crowd during the day trends a bit older, and you will probably find a Hawaiian shirt or two year-round here. the tap list is actually very good and they do have great prices as well. The hours cover you all afternoon and into the night, so it's the sort of place you can count on for a beer when you need one.

Amigo's in Portland

Andy's Old Port Pub

Andy's is a great spot down on the water side of commercial street. They have happy hour specials Monday thru Friday, and live music most nights. Tuesday nights are open mic starting at 8:00 pm. Stop by for a great mix of islanders, fishermen, music lovers and locals. Great 9 foot regulation pool table in the backroom, keeps you from the bar which is good so you don't bother drinkers and they don't bother you.
